docker run hello-world

docker run busybox ls

# to list running containers 

docker ps 

# all containers regardless on or off and it provide all the contrainers IDs

ps --all

docker run  = docker create + docker start

# -a to show the output of starting container

  # it create the container and print out the cont ID so you start it he way you want

# remove all the containers from your system 

docker system prune

# get the output of previously run container == get the out put of docker start ID

# how to stop or kill 

docker stop ID 

docker kill ID 

# in order ro pas command to already running ID use exec as follow 

docker exec -it 657e687e4d46 redis-cli

# to open shell in the running container use sh option as follow 

docker exec -it 657e687e4d46 sh

# to create and start container and get the shell in one command 

docker run -it busybox sh

# create your own image from base image

create new file Dockerfile

inside the file you will need to do three things 

1- mention the base image 

FROM alpine

2- download and install depandancy 

RUN apk add --update redis

3- other commands to tell the image what to do at startup 

CMD ["redis-server"]

then

docker build .

at the end

# to buil docker image has specific name you have yo use the -t and name the imge as shown 

docker build -t anyName/imageName:latest .

and to run it 

docker run anyName/imageName

# docker commit command we can use to build image without docker file and build command 

not recommended and we always should use dockerfile and build command 

lets assume we want to have image from alpine has redis installed 

docker run -it alpine sh 

the output is alpine with shell, now we have to install redis 

apk add --update redis 

now from another terminal we have to run command to image the running alpine\redis container 

and attach default 'redis-server' command 

docker commit -c 'CMD ["redis-server']' ID_OF_RUNNING_CONTAINER

the output will be the new image ID the customized one now we can run it 

docker run ID_OF_CUSTOMIZED

it will run the customized container

# docker run with port mapping 

docker run -p 8080:8080 Image_ID

this will forward the 8080 requests to the container after come up

# To run Node application listen on port 8080 

1- Dockerfile

FROM node:alpine

COPY ./ ./  #index.js and package.json has to exist on the same run directory

RUN npm install 

CMD ["npm", "install"]

2- docker build -t imageName/anyName:latest .

the output is the new built image with ID of imageName/anyName

3- docker run -p 8080:8080 imageName/anyName

the output is running container listing to port 8080

8080 port mentioned in the index.js file 

# working directory 

WORKDIR /usr/app

mentioning the WORKDIR after FROM it will set the working directory in the container 

so any copy command will be in the work dir not the root

so if we used the WORKDIR in previous sample and we used the exec option with sh 

the directory should be /usr/app

docker exec -it IMAGED_ID sh 

/usr/app# 

# to list all avaialble image 

docker image ls

# sample on build with tagging 

docker build -t visitorsapp:latest .

Successfully built c05d85008db0

Successfully tagged visitorsapp:latest

docker image ls

# docker-compose up

This command will look in the current workdir and build the existing docker-compose.yml file

# below compose file will start reis container from redis image and node container from package.json file do exist in the workdir

plus it will map the ports as shown

services:

    redis-server:

        image: 'redis'

    node-app:

        build:  .

        ports: 

            - "4001:8081"

# docker-compose up -d 

to run the compose in the background 

# docker-compose down 

to take the container(s) built by the compose down 

# docker-compose up => it build new from docker not re run 

# docker-compose up --build => this command to rebuild in case you built before 

# docker-compose.yml => notes

restart: always => if any internal error keep restart VERY RECOMMENDED TO USE ALWAYS

restart: on-failure => restart only on failure 

restart: unless-stopped => always attempt to restart on error until and unless we purposley stop the container 

restart: 'no' => dont restart

# docker-compose ps

it has to run from where the docker-compose-yml exist to list the cont started from this yml

# docker run -rm -it -p 5001:5000 image_id

-it it will run the image and pull the terminal interact in your terminal 

--rm to delete the container after build 

# to push your image to docker 

docker run -it -p 5000:5000 fahdmannaa/packtpic/simple-flask  

# here is how you can deploy docker image in AWS from the command line 

before running the following command make sure that was cli s installed and was profile is configured 

$ docker-machine create --driver amaznec2 -open -port 5000 amazon-ec2-region eu-west-3 aws-machine

this command will start to initiate the new ec2 in your account and allow port 5000

$ eval $(docker-machine env aws-machine)

this will make the current console login to the docker machine created in aws, so now you have full freedom to run docker commands 

$ docker-machine ip aws-machine

this will print the external ip address of this docker machine

$ docker run --rm -it -p 5000:5000 image_id

this command as usual will pull docker image from docker hub and run it inside the aws docker machine

$ docker-machine rm aws-machine 

this command will remove the aws machine 

# docker container ps -all 

list all the containers exist 

# docker container rename originalname newname

to rename the container 

# docker container start container_id --interactive

this command to start container do exist and return the terminal
